About Lotus Haven Ranch's Gypsy Cobs

About Our Program

The presence of a horse evokes a peace and calm that can only be felt in my heart. I have been led on a journey towards Gypsy Cobs, becoming enthralled with their gentle, intelligent and versatile natures. My vision is a low volume breeding program that remains extremely hands on and quality driven. I aim to focus on foundation lines that spotlight imortant breed character such as temperment, bone, feather and hair. This goes hand in hand with the education and wellness work that I long to do. I invite you to join me as I build my dream from the ground up. Same LOVE of horses just a new vision. Here you will find honesty, integrity, transparency, and dedication - Krista Long

At Lotus Haven, our Gypsy Cobs—also known as Gypsy Vanners—embody the harmony of strength, beauty, and temperament that defines this remarkable breed. Known for their flowing manes, abundant feathering, and powerful yet compact build, Gypsy Cobs are as captivating in presence as they are dependable in character. Our horses reflect what the breed is cherished for worldwide: calm, willing dispositions, intelligence, and a deep connection with people. Gypsy Cobs are naturally gentle and adaptable, making them exceptional partners for families, riders of varying experience levels, and those seeking a horse with both heart and substance.

A Breed Rooted in Purpose

The Gypsy Cob originated in the British Isles, carefully developed by Romani (Gypsy) travelers beginning in the 19th century. These horses were bred to pull traditional living wagons while remaining kind enough to be handled by children and steady enough for everyday life. Strength, soundness, thriftiness, and temperament were essential—beauty was a valued bonus.

To achieve this ideal, Romani breeders blended native British breeds such as Shires, Clydesdales, Fell Ponies, and Dales Ponies, selecting only the most reliable and good-natured horses. Over time, this thoughtful breeding produced the distinctive horse we recognize today: powerful yet gentle, flashy yet practical.

Our main goal and focus is to have our horses live their best lives. Period. The husbandry, the vetting, all of it. That is why we plan to keep things small. Our program will consist of 4 mares who display the well known Gypsy traits. Each selected for their temperament, breed character, ease to be around, among others. We want our horses around for the long haul as seen in our miniatures. So rest assured, our mares will be carefully selected.

With our program of 4 mares we intend to breed 2 mares per year giving the other 2 mares a year off. I plan to do this for several reasons including to give the mares body an adequate and much needed break between foals, and to always have 2 mares available for my own trail riding and eventually public wellness work.....more about that below.

Genetic Testing

Gypsy Cobs as with any species deserve to be bred ethically and responsibly. This includes genetic testing for diseases prone in the breed, veterinary exams prior to and after breeding. Appropriate farrier and body work. Our horses comfort and care is of utmost importance.

Foal Imprinting

I am a firm believer in lots of handling and desensitizing. Our foals will be imprinted at birth and know all of their baby basics by the time they are weaned and ready for new homes. I understand that foals require time and patience to develop the capacity to be outstanding equine citizens. This focus on foals is why our small broodmare base was so carefully selected and our stallion pairings so important.

Program Goals

My goal. for Lotus Haven Ranch is to further the Gypsy Vanner breed by intentionally, ethically and transparently breeding the next generation. To do this with the attention to detail that will be on display with every foal that is born into the Lotus Haven Ranch family
